FRENCH
French 1 CP grades 9-11 1 unit
Students in this class will begin to acquire some basic knowledge and skills required to communicate spoken and written French. They will develop an understanding of the cultures of French-speaking countries and their relationship with the USA. Course content will come from the textbook and from ancillary materials that support this textbook. This course does not serve as a prerequisite for French 2 Pre-IB.
French 1 H/Pre-IB grades 9-11 1 unit
Prerequisite: C average in English
French 1 introduces the student to French and includes practice in listening comprehension, speaking, reading and writing. Students master basic grammatical structures, write short compositions appropriate to their level and demonstrate oral proficiency, in dialogues and interviews conducted in class.
French 2 CP grades 10-12 1 unit
Prerequisite: Completion of French 1 CP
Students will continue to acquire knowledge and skills required to communicate spoken and written French and to develop an understanding of the cultures of French-speaking countries and their relationship with the USA. This course will not prepare a student to take French 3 IB
French 2 H/Pre-IB grades 9-12 1 unit
Prerequisites: Successful completion of French I H/Pre-IB
French 2 is a review and continuation of French 1 and provides more extensive study of French grammar and vocabulary. Oral communication is stressed, through group activities, exercises, presentations and role-play. Greater emphasis is placed on reading and writing skills. By the end of French 2, students should be able to understand spoken and written French at the pre- intermediate level.
French A1 SL (3rd year) grades 10-12 1 unit
Prerequisites: Successful completion of French 2 H/Pre-IB
The aims of this course are to help students become more proficient in French and to increase their knowledge of the various French-speaking cultures. Students will expand communication, listening comprehension, reading and writing skills. This is an intensive, rigorous course suitable for students who are preparing to take either AP/IB or French 4.
French B SL (4th yr) grades 11-12 1 unit
Prerequisites: C average in French A1 SL
The emphasis in this course will be on conversation and advanced reading, listening and composition skills using a variety of resources. This course is designed for juniors or seniors who do not wish to take the AP exam, but who wish to continue their study of the French Language or for juniors who are preparing to take the AP/IB exam in their senior year.
French IB grades 11-12 1 unit
Prerequisite: Seniors: C average in French A1 SL Juniors : C average in French B SL
In this course, grammatical structures are consolidated, vocabulary expanded and formal essay writing and oral fluency developed. This is a difficult, college-level intensive course designed to prepare students for success on both the AP/IB exam. |
GERMAN
German 1 CP grades 9 – 11 1 unit
Students in this class will master the fundamental skills of spoken and written German and will learn about the cultures of the German speaking countries. Course content will come from the textbook and the ancillary materials that support this textbook.

Prerequisites: German A1 SL
Students in this class will continue to develop German language proficiency and will be expected to communicate at an intermediate to advanced level. Students will continue to expand their awareness of the cultures of the German-speaking countries. Course content will come from a great variety of resources, including German-language newspapers and magazines, short stories, television shows, songs, web sites, etc.
AP/IB German grade 12 1 unit
Prerequisites: German B SL (exceptions may be made by instructor)
Students in this class will continue to develop German language proficiency and will be expected to communicate at an advanced to very advanced level. Students will continue to expand their awareness of the cultures of the German-speaking countries. Course content will come from a great variety of resources, including German-language newspapers and magazines, short stories, television shows, songs, web sites, etc. Students will take the AP/IB exam in the spring. |
SPANISH
Spanish 1 CP grades 9-11 1 unit
Students in this class will acquire basic knowledge and skills required to communicate spoken and written Spanish. They will develop an understanding of the cultures of Spanish speaking countries and their relationship with the USA. Course content will generally come from the text and from the ancillary materials that support the textbook. This course does not prepare a student to take Spanish 2 H/PreIB.
Spanish 1 H/Pre-IB grades 9-11 1 unit
Prerequisite: C average in English
This course provides an introduction to Spanish and practice in listening comprehension as well as speaking, reading and writing skills. Students will master basic grammatical structures and write short compositions appropriate to their level. The course utilizes videos, listening-comprehension cassettes and student workbooks. The program encourages cultural awareness through additional material and cultural information.

Prerequisite: Completion of Spanish 1 CP
Students in this class will continue to acquire some knowledge and skills required to communicate spoken and written Spanish and to develop an understanding of the cultures of Spanish-speaking countries and their relationship with the USA. Course content will come from the text and from the ancillary materials that support the textbook. This course will not prepare a student to take Spanish A1 SL.
Spanish 2 H/Pre-IB grades 9-12 1 unit
Prerequisites: Completion of Spanish 1 with a C or better and teacher recommendation

Spanish A1 SL (3rd year) grades 10-12 1 unit
Prerequisite: Completion of Spanish 2 H/Pre-IB
The aim of this course is to help the students develop proficiency in Spanish. More complex grammar structures are presented since a mastery of all verbs is expected. There are discussions and compositions based upon the reading material. This is an intensive, rigorous course.
Spanish B SL (4th year) grade 11-12 1 unit
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Spanish A1 SL
This course is designed to enable the student to become proficient in the communication skills. Materials and resources include tapes, literature and vocational opportunities.
AP/IB Spanish grade 12 1 unit
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Spanish B SL
This is an intensive course designed to prepare students for the AP/IB exams in the spring of the year. The main goals are to increase vocabulary and develop oral fluency, consolidate grammatical structure and formal essay writing. |
