Graduation requirements: 1 unit of US History, ½ unit Economics/Government, 1 unit of other social studies Economics CP1 grades 12 ½ unit This course will provide an overview of the rights and responsibilities of consumers within the free enterprise system, explore the role of the worker, business, government, and consumer within the United States economic system Economics CP2 grades 12 ½ unit Prerequisite: Enrolled in English CP2 This course examines the principles and practices of the American economic system and their relation to and effect on the average citizen and national policy. Projects on the stock market and current economic events are required. AP European History grade 10-12 1 unit The study of European history since 1450 introduces students to cultural, economic, political and social developments that played a fundamental role in shaping the world in which they live. In addition to providing a basic narrative of events and movements, the goals of the AP program in European History are to develop (a) an understanding of some of the principal themes in modern European History, (b) an ability to analyze historical evidence and (c) an ability to analyze and express historical understanding in writing. All students will attempt the AP European Exam in May. Geography (GS1) CP1 grade 9 1 unit This course focuses on the history and geography of humans from the development of ancient civilizations through the Renaissance and eighteenth century. The course will focus on why civilizations developed where and when they did, why they became dominant, why they declined and their contributions to the continuing development of our culture. Geography (GS1) CP2 grade 9 1 unit Prerequisite: Enrolled in English CP2 This course focuses on the history and geography of humans from the development of ancient civilizations through the Renaissance and eighteenth century. Critical thinking and writing skills will be emphasized in this course with a focus on why civilizations developed where and when they did, whey they became dominant, why they declined and their contributions to the continuing development of our culture. Geography (GS1) H/PreIB grade 9 1 unit Prerequisite: Enrolled in English 2 H/PreIB This course focuses on the history and geography of humans from the development of ancient civilizations through the Renaissance and eighteenth century. Critical thinking and writing skills will be emphasized in this course with a focus on why civilizations developed where and when they did, why they became dominant, why they declined, and their contributions to the continuing development of our culture. These students will be expected to continue in the PreIB program. Government CP1 grades 12 ½ unit This course is designed to give a practical examination of American government and politics. The student will become familiar with federal, state and local government; learn the basics of due process of law, and be made aware of the rights and responsibilities of citizens under the law. Government CP2 grades 12 ½ unit Prerequisite: Enrolled in English CP2 This course includes a study of the United States constitution and the federal system. The student is introduced to the lawmaking, law enforcing and the law interpreting functions of all levels of government. The student will be required to attend political and judicial functions in the community and perform community service hours. AP Government and Politics Grade 12 ½ unit Prerequisite: Eligibility for AP course AP Government will give students an analytical perspective on government and politics in the United States. This course includes both the study of general concepts used to interpret US politics and the analysis of specific examples. It also requires familiarity with the various institutions, groups, beliefs and ideas that constitute US politics. Students will take the AP exam in May. IB History of Americas HL grade 12 1 unit Prerequisite: AP U S History This course is designed to give students an in-depth view of selected twentieth century world history topics. The detailed study will emphasize the causes, practices and effect of war, the rise and rule of single party states, nationalist and independence movements, decolonization and challenges facing new states. Students will take the IB exam at the end of their senior year. AP Microeconomics grade 12 ½ unit Prerequisite: Eligibility for AP course AP Microeconomics will give the student a thorough understanding of the principles of economics that apply to the functions of individual decision makers, both consumers and producers, within the economic system. It places primary emphasis on the nature and functions of product markets, and includes the study of factor markets and the role of government in promoting greater efficiency and equity in the economy. The students will take the AP exam in May. Psychology H grade 11 - 12 1 unit This course is an introductory survey of the major topics in Psychology: basic theories of personality, methods of research, basic theory, biology of the brain, social and environmental bases of behavior and other issues in human behavior. The student is expected to conduct and participate in psychological experiments. A summer reading list must be completed before class begins in the fall. AP Psychology grade 10- 12 1 unit Prerequisite: Eligibility for AP coursework This course is an introductory survey of major topics of psychology: basic theory, methods, personality (abnormal and normal) and biological, social, environmental, cognitive and developmental bases of behavior. The course is designed for the intellectually talented and self-motivated students. Every student is required to take the Advanced Placement Exam. A summer reading list is to be completed before class begins in the fall. IB Psychology grade 11-12 1 unit Prerequisite: Eligibility for IB coursework This class is designed for students in the IB program who will be taking the IB test. A comprehensive project/experiment will require additional time before and after school and at different times during the school year. A summer reading list must be completed before class begins in the fall. This class is designed for the intellectually talented, self-motivated student. Sociology Honors grade 12 1 unit This course is designed for the college bound student. The course presents an in-depth study of social systems, social groups, values, norms, social problems and culture. The student will cover in-depth present day social issues. United States History CP grade 11 1 unit This course is designed to give the 2-year college-bound student background in United States history. Areas of study include colonization to the present. Students are required to pass a test on the Constitution and an End of Course test. United States History Honors grade 11 1 unit Prerequisite: Enrolled in H/Pre-IB English The course is designed to give the 4-year college bound student an in-depth study of the economic, political and social forces that have shaped the development of the United States from colonization to the present. Course requirements include current events and passing a test on the Constitution and an End of Course test.. AP/IB United States History grade 11 1 unit Prerequisite: Eligibility for AP course The student will assess historical materials through development of analytical skills and acquisition of factual knowledge. The course covers colonial America through the present and emphasizes the economic, social and political forces, which resulted in the rise of the United States to a world power. Course requirements will include supplementary reading of essays, documents and books. Essay writing and research are major parts of the course. All students are required to take the Advanced Placement Exam and an End of Course test. An emphasis will be placed on historical writing and document based questions. |
