AP Computer Science AB  (Elective) grades 11-12 1 unit
Prerequisite: Algebra 2
The AP Computer Science AB course is intended to serve both as an introductory course for computer science majors and as a substantial service course for students who will major in other disciplines that require significant involvement with computing.  This course emphasizes programming methodology and modularization.  It includes the study of algorithms, data structures and data abstraction. Each student is required to take the AP exam.

Drama                grade 10-12   ½ unit
This is an introductory course in the essentials of the theater with an emphasis on acting, role analysis and theater history. The student will submit two research papers and prepare an audience performance.

Driver’s Education    grades 11-12   ½ unit
Prerequisite: S. C. Driver’s Permit
This course is designed for the student to learn the rules and techniques of safe driving.  Included in the course is a minimum of thirty classroom hours of instruction and six hours of actual driving.

High School Success     grade 9      1 unit
This course is designed to help students with skills that are essential to success in high school.  Study skills, time management, career development and college planning will be addressed in this course.

Info Technology/Global Society SL    Grades 11-12    1 unit
Prerequisites: Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet and database applications.
ITGS is an IB course in which students study and evaluate the impact of information technology on individuals and other entities within a variety of social contexts.  Students complete a project in the first semester that uses information technology to address the needs of a real client.

Internet Applications    grades 10-12   ½  unit
 B average in English and teacher approval
Participants in this course will learn the basics of website construction. They will use the knowledge and skills learned to help maintain the AHS web site.  

Math Assistance   grade 12    ½  unit
Prerequisite: Below standard score on Math portion of the HSAP
This course is designed to provide remediation in the HSAP objectives for students whose latest scores on the HSAP are below standard.  

Newspaper Production grades 9-12 1 unit
Prerequisite: Approval of the newspaper advisor
This course will teach the student the essentials of publishing a school newspaper.  The student will learn feature, sports and editorial writing as well as aspects of advertising and layout.  The student will be required to work on the actual publication of The Hornet Herald, including the selling of ads.

Reading Assistance    grade 12   ½  unit
Prerequisite: Below standard score on the ELA portion of the HSAP
This course is designed to provide remediation in the HSAP objectives for students whose latest score on the HSAP are below standard.

SAT Prep                   grades 10-12     ½ unit
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Algebra, Geometry and enrolled concurrently in Algebra 2
This course is designed to help students prepare for the SAT.  During the semester students learn the testing format and develop procedures for working through the verbal and math sections of the exam.  The English portion stresses vocabulary development, sentence completion and reading.  The math section focuses on reasoning and offers practice in algebra, geometry and additional concepts.

Speech                    grades 11-12     ½ unit
This course is designed for students to learn to appreciate the value of effective speech, to improve their own speaking and to listen to the speeches of others with comprehension and critical judgment.  The course will give the student an opportunity to learn how to organize and present a variety of speeches including informative, how-to manuscript, impromptu and persuasive.  

Teacher Cadet                 grade 12      1 unit
Prerequisites: GPA and SAT requirements
This class is designed to introduce students to teaching as a career.  The class works closely with local elementary and middle schools, affording Teacher Cadets practical insights into the field of education.  Students considering Teacher Cadet must have a proven academic record, be self-motivated and disciplined.  Successful completion of the course will result in 4 semester hours of credit from the University of South Carolina system.

Theory of Knowledge  grades 11-12  ½ unit
Prerequisite: Student must be an IB diploma candidate
The Theory of Knowledge (TOK) program is central to the educational philosophy of the International Baccalaureate Program.  It challenges students and their teacher to reflect critically on diverse ways of knowing and areas of knowledge, and to consider the role which knowledge plays in a global society.  It encourages students to become aware of themselves as thinkers and to recognize the need to act responsibly in an increasingly interconnected world.

Yearbook Production   grades 9-12   1 unit
Prerequisite: Approval of the yearbook advisor
This course will teach the student the essentials of publishing a yearbook.  Included will be the basic knowledge of printing, business management and advanced layout planning and design.  The students will create the school yearbook on computer.  Some after school hours and summer hours selling ads are required.
