 pi Day 2008

Students in Miss Toepke’s Precalculus classes celebrated pi (Pi) Day on 3-14, since the value of pi is 3.14159….  They found approximations for pi by:

Measuring the circumferences and diameters of circular objects and dividing the circumference by the diameter.

Using Archimedes’ method of finding the perimeter of inscribed and circumscribed polygons about a circle, as well as using his predetermined formulas.

Dropping a toothpick on a piece of lined paper to see the number of times the toothpick landed on the line. Twice the number of times the toothpick is dropped divided by the number of times the toothpick lands on the line is supposed to be equivalent to an approximation of pi.

Students also made pi Bracelets, using colored beads to represent the digits of pi, attempted to solve a sudoku puzzle especially for pi Day, and sang pi Day songs.
