English

Graduation requirements: 4 units of English

English 1  CP       grade 9    1 unit
This course is designed for average or above average students who want to strengthen their written and spoken language skills and develop vocabulary and spelling skills. Students will begin to study communication skills in a workplace context.  Students will read and interpret examples of various literary genres and develop research and writing skills.

English 1 CP2           grade 9       1 unit
Prerequisite: Teacher recommendation
This course is designed for college-bound students who read above grade level and demonstrate an understanding of basic grammar.   This course emphasizes grammatical skills and effective sentence writing. Students will read and analyze a variety of literary genres and develop research skill.  Outside reading is required.  

English 2  CP1      grade 10    1 unit Prerequisite: English 1
This course expands communication skills, continues HSAP preparation and emphasizes the five major genres of literature.  It also emphasizes the analysis and interpretation of literature and continues to develop research skills.

English 2 CP2    grades  9-10        1 unit
Prerequisite: C average in English 1 and teacher recommendation
English 2 CP2 continues a study of grammar and usage.  Writing essays is emphasized.   A variety of literary genres is sampled and analyzed.  Students will research, write essays and will do some creative writing.  Outside reading is required.

English 2 H/Pre-IB  grades 9-10  1 unit
Prerequisites:  B average in English 1, identified as a SOAR student
English 2 H/PreIB includes a study of grammar and usage.  Improvement of essays is emphasized.  A variety of literary genres is sampled and analyzed.  Students will write essays and will do creative writing.  Various projects fostering creativity and independent research will be completed by the student. This class is suitable for both IB and advanced students.

English 3 TP            grade 11            1 unit
Prerequisite: English 2
While combining American literature studies and job-related communication skills, this English course provides a “hands-on” approach to an academic class.  Students choosing to enter technical college or the workforce upon graduation are encouraged to enroll. Activities include class discussions, speeches, research projects and presentations. Outside reading is required.

English 3 CP      grades 10-11      1 unit
Prerequisites: C average in English 2 and teacher recommendation
English 3 CP emphasizes correct usage in written and spoken language.  This course includes a survey of American literature from the Colonial period to the twentieth century and provides a basis for vocabulary and composition.  A formal research paper and outside reading are required.

English 3 H/Pre-IB   grades 10-11  1 unit
Prerequisites: English 2 PIB, identified as a SOAR students and a C average
English 3 H/PIB is a comprehensive American literature course that includes the in-depth study of the novel, poetry and different forms of writing, especially the research paper.  Students will be expected to complete independent projects using creativity on a variety of literary topics.  Outside reading is required.  This class is suitable for both IB and non IB students.

English 4 TP               grade 12         1 unit
Prerequisite: English 3
This English course is designed for students who are planning to attend a technical college or to enter the workforce directly after high school.  Emphasis is on practical application of grammar and British literature with emphasis on skills students will utilize in the workplace.  Activities include discussions, speeches, research projects and presentations to the class.

English 4 CP      grades 11-12       1 unit
Prerequisites: C Average in English 3 and teacher recommendation
This course emphasizes composition in preparation for college.  Vocabulary study focuses on the acquisition of an active and precise vocabulary.  Literary topics correlate with the survey of British literature from the Anglo-Saxon period to the twentieth century.  A formal research paper and outside reading are required.

English 4 SL   grades 11-12   1 unit
Prerequisites: C average in English 3 H/PIB and identified as a SOAR student
English 4 SL emphasizes composition, applied grammar, vocabulary acquisition and British literature.  Students are expected to engage in higher level thinking skills, conduct independent research on several topics and read and compare literary works.

Advanced Composition H  grade 12  1 unit
Prerequisites: English 4 CP and/or teacher recommendation         
This is a course in world literature and advanced composition.  Students read works representing various literary types and periods, some in translation, and write on literary and non-literary topics.

AP English        grade 12        1 unit
Prerequisite: Eligibility for AP coursework
Advanced Placement English is a college level course for students who wish to earn college credit during their senior year.  Designed to prepare student for the AP exam in literature and composition, the course focuses on careful reading of interpretive literature and on writing on literary topics.  Students must do extensive reading for class discussion and numerous essays.  At the end of the course, students must take the AP exam in English.
